From the cover: The inauguration of Gov. John P. St. John at Topeka, January 1, 1879, from a sketch by Henry Worrall in Harper's Weekly. The Weekly reported the gathering as "the first public inauguration of State officers . . . in Kansas." Note that only the east wing of the state house was completed.
