"The old windmill that stands on a hill overlooking Lawrence from the west end of warren street, was begun in 1863, just before the Quantrell Raid during which the work was nearly destroyed. However, it was finished in 1864 at a cost of $9,700. It is of Holland style, in which the top only revolves. Twelve Swedes were brought to do the work by the day. There were two run of stones, one for grinding wheat and one for corn. It also funished power for a wagon and plow shop. In July, 1886, the 'old mill' made its last run." |
