From the PHYSICIAN'S POCKET ACCOUNT BOOK AND PRACTICAL ADVICE FOR PROFESSIONAL SUCCESS, by J. J. Taylor, M.D., Copyright 1909, published by The Medical Council, 4105 Walnut Street, Philadelphia, PA.: The following will represent a practical and just fee-bill for ordinary services to patients who are in fair circumstances. This has been made up by a careful study of the average condition of medical practice in thirty-six States of the Union. In new portions of the country, as the Rocky Mountain and Pacific States, charges are higher than in the older settled States. Where unusual attention is required or responsibility involved, the charges are to be increased accordingly. Subsequent visits in surgical cases are to be charged at usual rates. When medicine is furnished it is to be charged at reasonable rates. Mileage is to be added at the rate of fifty cents to one dollar per mile, according to the condition of the roads or the customary rates of the locality. [EDITOR'S NOTE: For those who nostalgically yearn for the "good old days" of low-cost medical treatment, realize that if mileage were charged at this same rate in 1998 dollars, the cost would be a whopping $8.54 to $17.08 per mile!] |
