Kansas

(Sung to Tune: Battle Hymn of the Republic)

We have seen the clouds come rolling up
It looked like we'ed have rain
We have seen them gently scatter out and away again
While the wind kept right on blowing o'er our
Parched and naked plain
        As we kept hanging on

CHORUS:

Kansas, Kansas, we are staying
Kansas, Kansas, we are staying
Kansas, Kansas, we are staying
Cause we can't get away

We have seen the wheat come up so green
And our hopes were very bright
Then it shriveled in the hot wind as of
         Stricken with a blight.
And our hopes that were so rosy all
         Became as black as night
But we kept hanging on.

We have seen the big black dust clouds that
         Come rolling o'er the plain.
And it filled our lungs and houses
         Till we nearly went insane
But we took the broom and mop in hand
         And dug it out again.
And still kept hanging on.

We have dug and swept the dust out till
Our arms and backs were lame
We have breathed it in and sneezed it
Out till our noses were aflame
If we ever get away from here we will
         Not come back again
We won't keep hanging on.

Final CHORUS

Kansas, Kansas, we are leaving
Kansas, Kansas, we are leaving
Kansas, Kansas, we are leaving
If we can get a chance.
