Introduction by LLoyd A. Nichols

The front cover, very worn with the lower right corner missing; D. O. Doughty's handwriting on the front (see Introduction below)

ON THE COVER:
"E. N. Doughty's
account of his time [in?]
Rest of the Civil War
year 1865"

The Diary is about 7"x5". It has a light brown cover, is string bound and is in remarkably good condition considering its age. I believe that my grandfather, D.O. Doughty, Eli's son, wrote the inscription on the front. The pages are ruled white paper and are hand-numbered by the author. Pen and ink are used for all entries until July 17th and then pencil throughout. One hundred and thirteen men are listed as serving, 18 of whom die.

Elijah Nelson Doughty was born December 9, 1841, in Dryfork Preston Township, Jasper County, Missouri; he was 24 years old during the time his hand wrote the words in his Diary. He lived forty-three more years, and died April 27, 1908, at Forgan, Beaver County, Oklahoma, where he is buried.
